Split carrots and little white bugs

My mom kindly helped me do some weeding at the plot tonight. When we harvested some carrots though we noticed some had split and had little white bugs making home inside the split. Any thoughts? I pitched these ones…after running them under the tap the lil bugs would still not disappear! We still have a number of monster carrots to go along with Amanda’s monster beet however!

I also noticed what seems to be tiny mushrooms sprouting by the tomatoes. Any cause for concern?

  1. Eeeeeeeeew. Now I’m going home to look for bugs in my carrots… Blech.

I don’t think the mushrooms are a cause for concern. It’s just been hot and wet lately so they’ve sprouted under ideal growing conditions. You should see my lawn at home – lots of ‘shrooms where it’s damp and shady! Cheers, Lauren

And about the carrots…if they are split and buggy, just compost them. Kumkum and I removed a number of them today. We don’t want to encourage bug or bacteria development in our healthy plants. Best to get to our veggies before they split if we possibly can – splits result from too much moisture and growing too fast. Cheers, Lauren
